Fundraisers
The Tiffany Ball on October 1, 2011 Was a Success!
The Fundraising Committee we brought in a total of $10,700 from the October 1 Tiffany Ball. Thanks to B.A. Long, that profit has been doubled, making the grand total $21,400! This is the second time B.A. has matched the profit brought in by the Tiffany Ball. She does it in honor of her parents and brother. B.A., we wholeheartedly thank you for your generosity!
When reporting on those who contributed to the items sold in the silent auction at the Tiffany Ball, I neglected to mention the beautiful stained glass window provided by Cecile and Dick Ayres. It was the big ticket item in the silent auction that night! Thank you, Cecile and Dick!
Close to $400 was taken in at the holiday fair this year from the sale of the 5 x 7 “Harriman Fountain in 1011” pictures and tiles and the profit from the “cash for gold.” A thank-you is extended to Darlene Bartley and Barbara Thompson for overseeing that effort. By the way, the tiles and 5 x 7 prints are available for $10 each and make terrific Christmas gifts. If you would like to purchase some, please see Pat in the church office. The money will go into the window fund.

Blankets+ is a special mission opportunity that can involve all ages. Some 8,000 congregations and groups across the U.S. hold Church World Service Blankets+ events, providing funds to help people in need around the world, including the U.S. Blankets+ is especially designed for post-disaster use, and can provide warmth, comfort, and perhaps most importantly, the feeling that someone cares.
Please contact Fran Hoffman if you wish to make a group contribution through the church. You may also go to the Church World Service website to read more about the program..
Bridges to Community
Mission: To participate in building a house for a family
Bridges to Community (http://www.bridgestocommunity.org) organizes and facilitates international, cross-cultural service trips for volunteers to live and work in materially poor communities. They currently focus their work in Nicaragua, and this year, they expect to take nearly 1,000 volunteers in over 50 groups to participate in development projects with our community partners there.
BRIDGES – Community Construction
Safe and secure housing is a basic human right. Bridges has developed a sustainable housing project that meets this right, while simultaneously creating pride and a sense of ownership. To be sustainable in Nicaragua, we need to build earthquake-stable houses based on local building techniques. In combination with tile floors and a non-leaky roof, a Bridges house becomes a dignified, safe, and healthy home for a Nicaraguan family. For the sustainability of the project, and to avoid dependency-forming charity, we collect housing payments that equate to about half of the real value of the house. Those payments enter revolving community funds that go towards other housing or community-centered projects.
